Our world makes a lot of noise. We like noise.
It reminds us that we are not alone.
If we were really alone, the noise would be different.
We would not be able to distract ourselves by the intrusion of noise.
We might want to turn the volume down, but silence is so lonely.
Silence calls us to turn inward.
But distraction is a lovely drug of choice.
“Did you see that?” “What was that noise?” And ultimately . . .
“I’ll think about that tomorrow”.
What a gift to be able to hear the drop of a leaf.
The crystal ting of a wind chime even when you can’t feel a breeze.
It might even be possible to not hear yourself breathe, or blink an eye.
Finally, silence comes to the mind.
Chatter ceases.
Vision clears.
Peace.
